Tachysphex pechumani inhabits pine and oak savannas and sand barrens in the Great Lakes region (southwestern Ontario, Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio), and also in New Jersey, in North America. Females of this species hunt Short-horned Grasshoppers (Acrididae), e.g., Melanoplus spp. Paralysed prey is transported to the nest burrow excavated in sand, and the wasp's egg is laid on the grasshopper. T. pechumani is active in June-July; often found in loose colonies. A Near-Threatened species.
